The exterior of the low bowl is glazed in magnificent imperial red of most tasteful raspberry coloration, while the interior displays numerous hand painted butterflies and flowers in famille rose polychrome enamel. The minute detail is utterly sublime, with some of the linework as fine as a single hair, notably in the butterfly antennae and slender outlines of the botanicals. One of the finest examples of Chinese porcelain that we have ever offered, the work of a master for the imperial kiln. Spectacular, colorful butterflies with intricately speckled wings fly amongst beautiful peonies, bamboo, prunus branches, and lotus blossoms. Subtle gradation in color within individual petals and leaves reveal a meticulous attention to detail.
Of thinly potted and handsome form, the rim slightly flared, and standing upon a low raised foot. The copper red jihong exterior beautifully frames the lively butterfly & flower design in rarely seen imaginative style. The rare combination of the well balanced form, brilliant coloration, and subtle detail, is utterly magnificent. This exceptionally fine and elegant bowl measures approximately 8 inches across and 1 7/8 inches high, and is in excellent antique condition. Close inspection reveals subtle iridescence and minute crazing to some of the enamels commensurate with age related patina. Marked on the underside with the six character Yongzheng mark within a double ring in underglaze blue. Imperial porcelain from the reign of the Yonzheng emperor is exceedingly hard to come by, as his reign only lasted for a few years, from 1723 to 1735. Most examples of porcelain from this period are held by the world's top museums. Many are not nearly as spectacular as this example. This incomparable porcelain bowl represents the epitome of the Chinese 18th century aesthetic of cultured nobility. The rare combination of vibrant copper red glazing to the exterior and hand painted enamels to the interior are quite extraordinary. An important treasure of refined and elegant presence exhibiting gentle harmony.
