This Chinese soapstone hand made sculpture Iscarved in the form of a medallion. Interesting soapstone display piece featuring a Carp (see below) with an Imperial Guardian Lion aloft. Carved in relief against the surrounding flat surface of the circular medallion. The medallion being carved in great detail from hard soapstone with traces of green while the carp has brown details The piece stands approx. 17cm high and the medallion itself is approx.

Condition is very good indeed with only a small hole through that I can see that is a defect (see Pictures). Early 20th Century CARP can be transformations of dragons, or carp can sometimes change into dragons. According to tradition, a carp that could swim upstream and then leap the falls of the Yellow River at Dragon Gate (Longmen), would be transformed into a dragon: this motif symbolizes success in the civil service examinations.
