Antique Chinese Copper Cloisonne Enamel Imperial Dragon Brush Pot Pencil Vessel

This antique Chinese copper vessel measures 3.5 inches high with a 2.75 inch diameter opening and a 3 inch diameter base. It features an Imperial dragon.

This is not a modern cloisonné piece- it does not have uneven or pale surface colors or raised/detached cloisons. This vessel has a smooth texture and vivid colors. This is a multi-generational family piece.

Cloisonné is an ancient technique for decorating metalwork objects with colored material held in place or separated by metal strips or wire. The decoration is formed by first adding compartments (cloisons) to the metal object by soldering or affixing wires or thin strips of metal, placed on their edges. These remain visible in the finished piece, separating the different compartments of the enamel or inlays, which are often of several colors. Cloisonné enamel objects are worked on with enamel powder made into a paste, which then needs to be fired in a kiln.

The great Western period of cloisonné enameling was from the 10th to the 12th century, especially in the Byzantine Empire. No damage to the outer enamel, some enamel chipping inside the base. Box dimensions: 8 x 8 x 8.
