Since the introduction of the lion symbolism from Indian culture especially through Buddhist symbolism, statues of guardian lions have traditionally stood in front of Chinese Imperial palaces, Imperial tombs, government offices, temples, and the homes of government officials and the wealthy, and are believed to have powerful protective benefits. Each statue is carved in the round to show a strength body with an ornate coiffure with full lips and almond-shaped eyes with incised pupils beneath gently curving brows.
