Ornately carved Chinese wood panel, depicting a scene looking over the wall of an ancient Chinese palace into a room where a meeting is taking place on a wooden floor, framed with trees and having a view out to other palace buildings in the distance. In the picture, on the right there is a man standing with a twisted branch walking stick. The Buddhist monk'Bodhidharma' was famous for this. He is gesturing to a man on the left who is seated.
This can only be The Emperor, as he would not stand for others as a symbol of supreme authority. This is The Imperial palace as there are two women in the middle, whereas a temple like Shaolin was only men. In 527AD Bodhidharma is said to have gained audience with The Emperor'Xiao Yan' to promote'Chan Buddhism'. It could have come from a palace, or a temple, but both are high status buildings. Possibly rescued and brought west during'The Cultural Revolution' in the 1960's.Dimensions are 20.5in by 14in.
